County Information
c One of the most recognizable sites in Green County is the Historic Courthouse located in the center of the Monroe square. Completed in 1891, the majestic Green County Courthouse is distinguished by arched porticos with polished marble pillars, windows with granite block accents and a bell in the souring 120-foot clock tower. Although court-related services were relocated to the Justice Center in September, 2009, the courthouse is still home to the general government offices and visitors are always welcome. Monroe, the County Seat, is also home to Minhas Craft Brewery. Founded in 1845, it is one of the oldest breweries in America. Monroe is also known for being the only place in the United States that produces Limburger cheese. Stop in Baumgartner’s, located on the west side of the historic downtown square, to try a limburger cheese sandwich. Green County is home to a rich Swiss culture. In even years, the bi-annual Cheese Days Festival takes place spanning the entire downtown area in Monroe. New Glarus, “America’s Little Switzerland”, is also home to many different events and festivals.
